What is the right glove for you?

What is the right glove for you?

Need help choosing the right work gloves and reducing hand injuries? Don’t worry we’ll give you a hand 🧤

Adequate protection for our hands can sometimes be overlooked, and finding the right work gloves for your industry is important to ensure that you and your team’s hands are protected and efficient.

Broadly speaking, gloves fit into five main categories; general handling, cut-resistant, thermal, disposable and Specialty (e.g., welding, impact resistant, chemical, etc.).  Below we look at the first three categories:

General handling gloves

A general handling glove basically keeps the hands clean, and protected from minor scratches, and scrapes. It can also help protect the product you are working with if applicable.

The All Guard Spyder glove is a general handling glove, and suitable for most low-risk situations. An excellent general purpose glove with great dexterity for all day use.

The Spyder glove has been well proven in situations such as warehousing and construction. It has a sandy grip nitrile palm. This means that the palm has a nitrile rubber compound which is very durable, while the sandy grip gives you good grip in wet or oily conditions.

The MaxiFlex Ultimate glove is a step up from the Spyder. This is certified by the Skin Health Alliance and Oeko-Tex which ensures that there are no nasties in the manufacturing process. It is excellent for people with skin conditions, as it is very unlikely to aggravate dermatitis. The gloves have ad apt cooling technology which helps regulate the temperature of the wearer’s hand. They are also touch screen compatible.

Cut-Resistant gloves

Cut-Resistant gloves are exactly what they sound like, they are designed to protect the wearer’s hands from cuts while working with sharp tools or blades.

When selecting the right cut-resistant gloves it is important to understand the various ratings. It is important to ensure that your gloves are rated to the EN388 Standard so you can rest assured that you and your team are using tested and certified products. This standard gives you a lot of information about the glove very quickly.

You can see that the glove has this stamp with the standard EN388, a shield with a hammer inside, and the 4, 5, or 6 numbers/letters below. The higher each number or letter is, the better the rating.

Generally, you would look at the cut resistance ratings the most (Coup and TDM-100). This gives you an idea of where the glove falls in this spectrum.

The Esko X540 Glove is a good all-round cut-resistant glove. You can see that this is a cut 5 or C glove, which is at the upper end of cut-resistance. As a guide, you can use this in warehouse situations where knives are being used, as well as working with aluminium or steel sheets, glass, or industrial blades.

Thermal gloves

Turning now to thermal gloves, with a focus on thermal gloves for cold conditions.

The Arctic Touch is a best seller in the freezer space and has proven itself to be very durable and effective. It has is a sandy dip nitrile and a warm thermal lining. This glove has been developed “hand-in-hand” with our customers and designed to best suit their needs, and one feature that sets it apart is the touch screen capability. While it is handy for playing candy crush in the freezer, it is designed for companies who use touch-screen picking devices when picking orders. Technology in the dip of the glove allows for static electricity to be conducted from the wearer to the device, meaning that it works on resistive as well as capacitive screens This is a chiller glove, meaning that it is most effective when used in temperatures down to -10 C.  Ideal for use in Coolstore, Chiller, Packhouse, Loadout areas etc

The Power Grab Thermo is another thermal glove that is very popular. This has a micro finish latex coating which gives very good grip. Being orange, it is also useful in low-light conditions to avoid hand entrapment.

The essentials for picking the right glove

When investing in work gloves, remember:

  • Risk: What is the main hazard you are protecting against? E.g. cuts, chemicals, dirt, infectious organisms, cold, heat. Remember that there may be more than one of these risks present
  • Grip: Do your gloves need a super strong grip? Are you working with dry, wet, oily materials?
  • Cut-resistance: Important when you’re looking to minimise injuries. Are you working with knives, sheet metal, aluminium, glass?
  • Temperature: Ensuring the glove covers the right temperature range for what you need
  • Durability: Gloves with the right coatings for your task will last longer. Consider if you need to use touchscreen devices as part of the job
  • Fit: A secure fit with the flexibility and dexterity to complete each task is essential.
